Ultimate eCommerce SEO check-list

If you are just getting started with optimizing your website or you are a startup ready to dive into the highly competitive market, here is a handy SEO checklist which you can use to make sure you have covered each and every aspect of it. 

  • Implement Google Analytics for detailed insights about your website.
  • Verify your site in Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Include a privacy policy and terms of service pages on your website.
  • Include the primary keywords in title tag of every page
  • Make title tag copy relevant, compelling and inspiring.
  • Make title tag between 50-60 characters. (If longer, you will have to optimize it)
  • Use your brand name in your title tag to leverage branding.
  • Set up unique and relevant meta description tags for each page, including a motivational call-to-action.
  • Investigate the HTML improvements section in Google Webmaster Tools and fixed all meta description and title tag issues.
  • H1 headline tag should be unique and relevant.
  • Include primary keywords in the page headline.Make title tag copy relevant, compelling and inspiring.
  • Make title tag between 50-60 characters. (If longer, you will have to optimize it)
  • Use your brand name in your title tag to leverage branding.

  • Include the primary keyword (or keywords) in at least one sub-headline.
  • Include the primary keywords within the body copy in a natural and compelling way.
  • Make sure there are no misspellings or poor grammar.
  • Include relevant internal links throughout your content
  • Do a google site search and review results to make sure no irrelevant content is coming up.
  • Specify descriptive and relevant alt attributes for every image or graphic item.
  • Include relevant captions surrounding the images that include the target search phrase.
  • Generate a dynamic XML sitemap for your images.
  • Submit the XML image sitemap to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Set a meaningful name of all downloadable files like - brochure, user guide. etc...
  • Compress and optimize your image files to the extent that it does not deteriorate its quality.
  • Implement rel=”next” and rel=”prev” tags for better pagination handling.
  • Permanent redirect (301) for a preferred domain (www or non-www)
  • Set a preferred domain for your website (www or non-www) within Google and Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Use a canonical tag element on pages with required parameters that don’t change the page content (such as: sort parameters, user-id, etc.)
  • For multi-language sites, did you implement rel=”alternate” hreflang=”x” annotations across region-specific content
  • Check your site’s loading speed with Google’s PageSpeed Insights, YSlow or Pingdom’s Website Speed Test tool
  • Make sure you are not blocking any CSS, JavaScript files or important images with Robots.txt.
  • Check that the content of selected and most important pages is showing up on Google’s cache.
  •  Make your site mobile friendly.
  • Use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test tool to test your mobile site. Google recommends a responsive website for effective rank on google search result.
  • Search for your brand on mobile and make sure there is a ‘mobile friendly’ label with it.
  • Include geo-meta tags, which provide context for localized searches. (helpful for local SEO)
  • Make sure that the NAP (stands for Name, Address, Phone) on your website exactly matches the NAP on your Google Places listing.
  • Use your business address in the copy of some of your pages.
  • Have social share buttons on your product page. (Make your website and products easily shareable)
  • Collect customer reviews as much as you can.
  • Write unique content for every page and products.
  • Invest time in making brand and product videos (Videos will dominate 2016)
  • Have a Q&A block for your products.
  • Have a perfect working search bar on your website.
  • Ensure that there are enough trust signals on your website. (Reviews, Contact Details, Secure Payment)
  • Include breadcrumbs on your website
  • Have a blog and make sure you update it regularly.
  • Minify Javascript, CSS and HTML.
  • Merge Javascript and CSS.
  • Structure your URL properly to include keywords and do not make it dynamic. 
  • Enable gzip in server for proper caching
  • Make the navigation of the website as easy as possible.
  • Make sure your website have enough number of social count on key pages and is linked with social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus
  • Start an effective link building campaign to get backlinks from maximum number of websites (P.S. Never buy links)
  • Write unique product description and titles(Google hates duplicate thin content)
  • Make sure that your website has a clear value proposition. 
  • Make the checkout process simple, secure and one page. (Users abandon cart if the checkout process is long)
  • Include a filter option to make it easy for visitors to search for a product.
